The discussion began at two different spots on the web, on Day Two of the ongoing West Indies vs Sri Lanka first test match, after Chaminda Vaas, yet again dismissed Chris Gayle.
Chris has been dismissed seven times out of nine by Vaas in test matches versus Lanka and those seven innings read something like this - 9, 1, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0 - which made one poster wonder if Vaas was the best flat-track pace/medium-pace bowler ever.
Impressions began to fly around, names were suggested - McGrath, Pollock, Ambrose, Walsh, Imran Khan, Kapil Dev, Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Malcolm Marshall, Bob Willis, Hoggard, Lillee, Hadlee...you get the picture.
The discussion wasn't geting anywhere, so I requested the whiz at this mysterious aspect of cricket, David Barry of Pappu's Plane - cricket stats to enlighten us on this if he had the time.
He's the best in this business mind you...look around the blogosphere and you'll find the man to help you with your conundrums is David. Nearly every involved cricket blog seeks his opinion from time to time and draws from his own research.
So, David agreed to analyze this and came up with a rough model of selection criteria and whipped up some amazing stuff. Take a look at this folks, you all who have been following this discussion - Toiling Away.
I can assure you there are some surprises popping up.
