There was a change of guard recently at the top of an old cricketing institute. Everyone has exhausted their words on it, but I appear to have missed it all between this and that. A few words to make amends -
There is a general feeling that KP's stint began as a soap befitting the public persona of the man. Public people with charisma certainly appear to have their share of arresting twists and turns in the script.
Samir Chopra, who now writes for Cricinfo, had a nice blog on KP over there.
My own opinion is that it was a good debut for him. Perhaps the kind of change England needs, though it is too early to tell if KP remains his own man or wants to gradually blend into the cliche an England cricket captain really is. Even Beefy, the unconventional Englishman, looked to blend rather than stir...
One thing's certain, KP clearly knows when and how to use Monty and what kind of fields to place for him. So that's a plus-5 from me right away towards his captaincy.

He does seem a little bit overconfident, though.. talking about the Ashes already?
A captain is only as good as his bowlers, and that could be a problem for England if they want to get back to the form of 2005.
Mind you, the batsmen are struggling at the moment, too...
True, the bowlers and batsmen have to support the skipper. The skipper could play a role in extracting the best and maintaining it from a player besides having a say in picking the men he feels will do the job for him.
The Ashes talk must be to inspire and set a goal to work towards. There will be targets in between but I think it is just a statement of direction.
My only problem is with the talk about "recapturing; rather, they must talk about creating something new. Recapturing is somewhat limiting...working afresh, with the material at hand, with new strategies gives a sense of purpose and energizes. A new skip must capitalize on this "wealth" of initative he has at his disposal when still relatively new.
In fact, KP's relatively better handling of Monty could be the lingering influence of Warney from Hants. That reveals a perceptive trait in KP...the ability to observe, learn and retain.
