Olympics 2008 Update - 08

BOXING: Two down and one to go

Jitender too lost his bout today and joins Akhil in rooting for the last and final of the three pugileers - Vijender Kumar, in an hour's time from now.

WRESTLING:

Sushil Kumar mats a bronze in the Men's Freestyle 66 kg.

There may have been more medals earlier, but the two India has this time thus for are individual efforts unlike the Hockey team golds of the past. Maybe inspires something more out of this billion strong.

Also, Usain Bolt is on again in 200 mts. Is it safe to express my awe of him yet or must I wait a little longer for the mandatory olympic unrinalysis?

There is something strange about bolt... especially the way that 100m record happened... literally jogging towards the end. Got to wait and watch for some doping scandal... else he is easily by far the greatest.

I hadn't seen Usain Bolt run before, Scorpi, and hence I was taken aback. But after watching reruns of him and the 200...there a few things which I was thinking of which made it look so easy.

He did like he had a bit more left in the tank. I bet he must be the first 6ft 5 inch sprinter of high quality...someone who can also pump his limbs fast as a shorter man, thus maximizing the advantage his longer stride gives him. The general impression is there is an optimum centre of gravity which helps a sprinter. Also, taller racers could suffer in their nerve conduction times in comparison to optimally "heighted" sprinters, the nanoseconds of which could add up over a distance.

Then he enjoys what he is doing and shows it. We end up sharing the spirit with which he sprints...athletics needs charisma like that along with his talent.

He is awesome. My congratulations to Usain Bolt and Jamaicans.
