- Scorecard
Australia didn't collapse as soon as spin was thrust upon them. Ricky Ponting will no longer have the unblemished record he had in India. Kumble and Harbhajan didn't pick 9 wickets between them. Zak and Ishant did not prove inadequate. There were a few generally believed myths destroyed out there since I left them at Lunch on the first day.
Records tell us Australia does not collapse in the first innings here - that is reserved for the second innings. If India get 100 on them in the first, this match is going only one way.
The lesser Australian bats were not expected to do well - they didn't, bar one - Haddin, who played a crucial role in resurrecting the innings with Hussey. The better Australian bats were expected to shoulder the burden, Ricky Ponting included - they did, bar two - Hayden who got out to a Zak peach and Michael "Pup" Clarke who fell for an even peachier Zak peach.
But Ricky came good - he kept his promise - he toughed it out when things were happening up to lunch and cashed in later to record his first test century in India. It was an important innings.
Equally important, if not more competent, was Hussey's innings. He is a commonsense player like Sehwag. Now don't get excited about the comparison - both play the ball in the same manner - if it is there to be played, play it. The difference is only in the execution, Hussey being a little more circumspect with his choice of strokes as compared to Sehwag, but no less dangerous and far more consistent. And that is saying a huge thing. The way he marshalled the innings with the lower order - brilliant stuff from Mike Hussey!
But Australia did not really get away. As a champion team with some inexperience strife, they did well to score 400+ in the first outing on a batting surface first up. The pitch has begun to act up now and I reiterate that if Sehwag lasts till at least lunch today, then this game is going one way - India's way.
It has been observed over the past year that Kumble no longer incises through the skin and walls of the opposition to get at the heart in double quick time. One recalls mentioning in one of the backposts that Kumble increasingly needs assistance from pitch and the a tall score to do that. However, he continues to be a browbeating customer for the batsmen and in the second innings is often dangerous.
Harbhajan is the one who should be stepping it up to younger-Kumble levels. he's bow;ling flat and fast like Kumble but with far poorer results. The uniformity of pace by him and Kumble was partly responsible for Australia settling in, particularly Ricky Ponting. There was no attempt to decieve in the air. However, credit to Ponting remains for playing purposefully.
The way the pitch is behaving ( I caught the late-night highlights yesterday ), the two could actually prosper with this method of bowling in the second innings. Even if India doesn't get that 100 up on Australia and ends up somewhere around, on either side, of Australia, they will matter in the third innings. Australia is sure to go for setting a target, irrespective of whether India is about par or 100 ahead. This pitch will fizz and strike day five, maybe also on day four. It already is like a precocious cobra, going for the ankles now and leaping up to the forehead then.
In fact, under such conditions, the performers of the first innings, Zak and Ishant could also be a handful. But first, Sehwag must play at least 50 overs today and weather must hold up.

SB - won't tire of saying this, india miss the 3rd quick - but then, team selection only works itself out in the 2nd or 3rd test.
Laxman gone. They still look like they're in Lanka. and mitchell is the third m
I saw a couple of overs on the first day, when Sehwag was bowling.
It is a puzzle why he is not given more overs. A ball that he bowled to Hussey, pitched on the middle and off and turned viciously across Hussey's hesitant bat. It looked as if there was a rough out there and a clone of Warne was showing off his wizardry.
But unfortunately we did not get to see more of this.
The ball was also keeping low. Ponting, before he got out, got in trouble with a few that kept low.
My guess is that our spinners did not bowl well. It would be a better idea to look beyond Kumble and Harbhajan.
Anyway I am happy about the runs that Ponting and Hussey got. They deserve a better average against India than the measly ones they have now.
Seems the score has gone from 94/3 to 106/4. Deep trouble. But, Dravid is holding the fort, more like leeching to the wall. Hope he does not lose his concentration, as he so often does these days.
the practical problem with three pace attack are
1. kumble won't drop any of batsmen...he is too conservative for his bold approach...
2. will have to leave bhajji...while he should not be the lone spinner on current form...
India definitely needs 3 seamers and a 5 men attack.
I heard two decisions went against India today. Gambhir was not out as the ball pitched on leg and Dravid's was doubtful. When Australians had quite a few doubtful decision go their how come India fails to get even one on its way.
Ganguly fighting it out in the middle and Dravid got his second 50 in a row. Can he resurrect himself?
Still trailing by 229 runs. Can India save this test?
Theoretically India can also win but chances are very little.
Forgot to mention about Dhoni. He scored 9 off 51 balls before being dismissed by Michael clark. What was he doing there in the middle?

India avoids follow-on and Ganguly marching to his 50. It's bit of an irony two most pilloried men are the top scorers for India in this innings so far.
Harbhajan fighting as usual. Hope Kumble too comes good with bat. If India can cut down the lead to around 100 or less then it can even hope to win this match.
Another one comes India's way and this time it is Ganguly who was hit outside the line of off stump.
What is it that always Australia gets most of the marginal, doubtful and bad decisions its way?
I think we are all white men under the skin... :)
Well done Bhaji. This lad just loves Australia.
This is his third 50 in the last four tests against Australia. One at Sydney and one at Perth and now here in Bangalore. I wish he shows some of this performance with the ball too, in this series
Indian tail is eating away Aussie lead. Zaheer playing a good knock too. How about a fifty from him. I am just loving it.
I don't get you Bas
bhajii gone... :(
but he and khan showed that all is not lost...if we can extend play into one hour next morning...it will be ozies who will have to do all the running to win this match...
Yes SP. Hats off to Bhaji and Zak is doing a wonderful job. Hope all those batsmen sitting in the pavilion watched this partnership.

India would have appreciated even more if Harbhajan had performed with the ball but anyways he tried to compensate with the bat, Somebody wrote above why Sehwag's ball was turning viciously and not for others, My friend Sehwag is the only brave one out on the field courageous enough to give the ball flight, Harbhajan and Kumble are bowling too flat and fast, Harbhajan over the years have started to bowl on the pads and a bit flatter, he will be economical but will never take too many wickets especially in test matches.
Gambhir was plumb, but Dravid's was probably the umpteenth contentious decision going against him. Hatts off to Bhajji and Zak - that's the spirit, people!
Hi Folks!
Hopefully Sunday today I should be able to take in a full day's play!
Been watching the highlights/reruns later in the night.
Harbhajan and Zak played well and have rescued India from unequivocal defeat to the zone of equivocality.
Sehwag played like a maniac on a string....a robot with a power surge...maybe a short-circuit.
Sachin, sorry to say, is lingering...not just at the crease when 'e was out clear as daylight but also in the team.
Mitch was good, but he was encouraged by the two errors from Sehwag and Sachin.
Laxman...looks like the life-sap's gone out of him too with the expulsion from DC proving some kind of mortal blow. The mistake laxman has made in his career is to make it appear for long that he was using test cricket to find a place on the limited overs team....hence, one finds this avenue opening up which suggests that his focus being to prove he was worthy in limited overs, the sudden loss of even this franchisee chance for which he even gave up his star fees, must have been terribly demotivating, and perhaps disorienting, as perhaps his being first told that he wasn't good enough to play for India in ODIs/WC.
No one can be sure of this avenue of thought, but I feel the motivating factors are gradually coming down for him as well.
Change, for better or worse, is welcome today.
Thanks for the participation during the live matches...reading back is informative and interesting. :)
Today...India bundles out Ozzie for less than 150?
For all those who were talking about the 3rd seamer, a question please.
Why doesn't Ganguly get a bowl? Whenever he got to bowl, he did bowl decently. Now, that announced his retirement, he doesn't lose any strength. In the past, it has been said that he needs to be preserved which is why he doesn't get to bowl as much as he can. But, why not now?
Sehwag should also be given bowling.
Good question Yenkayya. Ganguly may actually be useful on this pitch.
Kumble's captaincy is courageous but "readable."
